Design and Technology
Our Design & Technology (D&T) curriculum fosters creativity, problem-solving skills and practical knowledge. It has been designed to ensure we provide coverage of the subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum states that 'Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.'
We intend to help our pupils to develop an appreciation of the relationship between a product and its intended user, teaching them to consider this when making design choices. Our pupils will be offered regular opportunities for reflection, allowing them to offer critical feedback and suggest improvements to both their creations and existing products. Our D&T curriculum is intended to inspire pupils to be curious and innovative whilst enjoying the challenge of designing and making products which have a clear purpose.
Technology projects are mapped into 4 strands of learning construction, control (mechanisms and ICT/ electronics) , food and textiles. Skill progression is mapped using the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum and is organised using each of these strands.
In line with research our projects follow the format of the cyclic design process. Children are encouraged to evaluate/ disassemble real products, complete skill focused tasks to inform their planning/designing and use a range of materials and construction methods to make products which fulfil a given brief. Evaluation of the final product often forms the last step but can be used to inform/improve a second make process.
Pupils are provided with a wide range of necessary tools, materials and resources to complete their projects. Projects can involve using a range of sharp tools and equipment and children are taught how to use these tools and equipment safely with supervision.

Lower keystage 2 have been using maps of the local area to inspire their textiles work.
KS2 children have been designing and making fairground rides using electronics, gears and pulleys to speed up, slow down or change the direction of movement.

Skiddaw have been using their sewing skills to design and make a holder for a precious item using designs inspired by their woodland art work .
Class 1 have been developing their sewing skills with stitching practice tasks to make rabbits.
The children used construction to create garden bird feeders. Margot from Birds Bistro in Penruddock visited to help us evaluate them and set them up for the birds in our garden.
